A History of Chateau Malkow

The history of the palace in Malkow starts in the first half of the 19 th century, when Pawel Biernacki, then owner of the building (supposedly a former aide-de-camp of Napoleon Bonaparte), decided to rebuilt an early medieval castle into ancestral abode. The building is twin similar to a classical palace at Elba Island, which was rebuilt from residence of Napoleon Bonaparte who was expelled. The building was made between years 1820 and 1830 by a main architect of Warsaw since 1813 - Fryderyk Albert Lessel.

In the year 1875, the palace with its whole property (about 800 hectares) moved into the hands of Pstrokonscy. Between years 1910 and 1920 some significant reconstructions were made. Two small porches were added: one on the front side and a pseudo-porch on the park side.
For many years palace was a place for aristocracy and artists. Wladyslaw Reymont was a frequent guest here. Ladies Pstrokonski organised an intensively used place called ‘malarnia’ – a house for painters.
